NOTE: Instructors are strongly advised not to become slaves to the powerpoint. The powerpoint serves to completely detail the material that should be covered in each module; an expanded lesson plan if you will. This is needed because the lesson plans are either vague, repetitive or not so clear as what to cover in which module or course. Instructors should employ techniques of Q&A, whiteboard development, demonstration, outdoor instruction and similar to keep the course lively, interesting, and informative. Some of the powerpoints are merely captures of what is taught in other forms during the course. The instructor should develop their own style for each module. Just try to stick to what is in the powerpoint for that module to avoid treading on another instructor or module. The material as covered in the powerpoint will build on what came before and cover everything needed in the exam and for the level of referee being taught.

v0.0 to 0.1 - Raw, nothing really there yet
v0.2 to 0.4 - Initial edits. Still missing some basic information. May be wrong order and off-topic in some places.
v0.5 to 0.7 - First real initial cut. Much of the expected material
v0.8 to 0.99 - Almost final cut. In beta use in classes as well.
v1.0 on up - Released; updates as needed.
Much of the content, diagrams, and ideas are by Randy Harr, Referee Director of Instruction, Region 43 (Los Altos, California). Major organization of the material into the AYSO Module format (modules 1-19) also due to him.
The initial PowerPoint template, much of the sketched illustrations and some initial content are borrowed from the USSF Entry Level Referee Course in 2003. The USSF Grade 8 course is the equivalent of AYSO U8 Official, Regional and Intermediate course all rolled into one. Jeff Kolmeyer was the keeper of the material at that time. He mentioned that the original source material is from many people not attributed. Check the USSF referee instructional website for more information.
The initial youth orientation, some text, some practical advice and much inspiration from the AYSO Region 26 Regional Referee course of 2003; Hugh Vanderplas and Roy Levin, original and main authors. Updates by Maurice Bizzarri in 2005 incorporated also.
The course has been used for four years (Spring and Fall classes in some cases) with over 20 classes taught and over 300 graduates. Many have taken the U8 Official course one season and come back to take the Regional Upgrade course the following season; all with success. We have a perfect first pass rate on the exam(two exceptions might be one who did not attend 1/2 the modules but tried to take the exam against our recommendation anyway; the other a non-english reading parent who had to be verbally examined). A number of other instructors and regions have team teached or used the material; leading to more generalizations and removal of the original authors teaching nuances.
Thanks to Bob Henderson and Jim Lorenz, RDI's of sister Region 45 Mountain View, for team or solo teaching a number of the U8 and Regional courses with me over the years. This has led to significant improvement in the material and insights into different ways to cover the subject. And to Beau James and Percy Irani of the same region for their instructor and mentor roles as well. Percy and Steve Eglash are now assisting with the Intermediate course and its material development as well. A big thanks to Hugh for being a fantastic role model as instructor for my very first referee course -- a role that is still hard to live up to.
